If I was a real Canadian, I would know how to….

This is a series of collage paintings that I made in the fall of 2010 and are based on schematic drawings that I found in old Popular Mechanics books and online. The series If I were a ‘real’ Canadian, I would know how to…’ explores ideas of ‘making’ and ‘using’ as ways that we can practice our sense of cultural identity. In this work, I explore three iconic Canadian objects (the canoe, the snowshoe and the Bombardier ice fishing vehicle) and our relationships to them.

In this work, I seek to question our relationship to these icons and to explore what they mean to our collective identity. Do we even know how to use or make these things? If not, are they just a part of our history or are they part of how we define ourselves today?
